EU Commission presses on with EU AI Act timetable despite industry concerns and introduces General Purpose AI code of practice

On 4 July 2025 the EU Commission confirmed that it is pressing ahead with the existing timetable for the entry into force of the EU AI Act, despite concerns raised by industry.

A spokesperson for the Commission stated that although they take concerns of industry seriously, “there is no stop the clock, there is no grace period”.

A quick reminder then of the upcoming deadlines:

August 2025 – General Purpose AI model obligations, governance provisions

August 2026 – Act becomes generally applicable (with some exceptions).

The Commission has now issued its General Purpose AI Code, which applies to providers of GPAI models, covering transparency, copyright and safety and security. It is voluntary and will apply from 2 August 2025.

You can find the code and FAQs here and here.
