ICO issues guidance on disclosing documents to the public

On 31 July 2025 the ICO issued new guidance in relation to disclosing documents to the public, either by publishing documents online, sending them to customers or responding to information requests (including DSARs).

The guidance is aimed at reducing the risk of data breaches by inadvertently disclosing data (such as, for example, unintentionally including meta data which contains personal data).

There are detailed sections on how to avoid inadvertent disclosure of hidden information in documents, spreadsheets and while redacting documents as well as checklist to accompany these sections.

The full guidance can be found here.
