On 28 October 2025 noyb filed a criminal complaint against Clearview AI for persistent violations of EU data protection law.
Clearview AI has been subject to multiple enforcement actions, including fines and bans by data protection authorities in France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK in relation to scraping facial images from the internet to build a database, which it sells primarily to law enforcement and state actors.
Max Schrems, stated that Clearview’s conduct represents “extremely invasive” mass surveillance which ignores fundamental rights in the EU. The criminal complaint aims to escalate the matter beyond administrative fines and ensure accountability for Clearview’s disregard of EU law.
