ICO publishes updated opinion on age assurance for the Children’s code

The ICO has published an updated opinion on age assurance for the Children’s code to reflect updated practices.

The updated opinion covers:

  • age assurance methods including age verification, age estimation, self-declaration, waterfall techniques and age buffers
  • the legislative framework (including a consideration of the scope of the Children’s code and the Online Safety Act)
  • risk assessment and the code, including a section on activities which will be likely to result in a high risk to children and how this interacts with age assurance
  • expectations for age assurance and data protection compliance (including how the principles interact with age assurance)
