X Pauses Use of EU Personal Data to Train AI Systems

X has given an undertaking to the Irish High Court to pause processing of EU and EEA personal data in public posts to train its AI systems after the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) launched legal proceedings against it, X having refused the DPC’s requests to stop the processing in question.

Meanwhile, noyb has made complaints against X with nine data protection authorities and has accused the DPC of taking “half-hearted action”, not addressing core issues like how X will separate EU and Non-EU data and what repercussions stem from the use of data so far.

noyb states that X started using the personal data in May 2024 without informing users or asking for their consent, which it contends is the appropriate legal basis for the processing.

The Irish DPC’s statement on the suspension of processing can be found here and noyb’s update on the action they are taking can be found here.
