European Parliament approves the AI Act

On 13 February 2024 the European Parliament approved the text of the AI Act (the Act) by majority vote.

The Act is now only subject to a final linguistic check and a formal endorsement by the Council of the EU.

The Act will enter into force twenty days after publication and be fully applicable 24 months after its entry into force. Some provisions will commence at different dates; bans on prohibited practices will apply six months after entry into force; codes of practice will apply from nine months; general-purpose AI rules including governance will apply from 12 months; and obligations for high-risk systems will apply from 36 months.
