ICO announces focus on smart devices and period and fertility tracking apps

The ICO have stated their interest in two topics this month. In response to an article published by Which on its concerns that smart devices are harvesting excessive data, the ICO has made it clear that they are concerned by this. The ICO has stated that it is developing guidance on data protection and the internet of things and will act where the rules are not being followed.

The ICO also commissioned a poll which showed that over half of women are concerned about the data security on period and fertility tracking apps. Users of the apps had noticed an increase in targeted advertising relating to fertility/babies, which caused distress in some cases. The ICO wishes to further investigate the potential harm caused by the use of these apps and has asked users of the apps to come forward and share their experiences.
