ICO statement on cookie compliance

The ICO has advised that it has had a positive response to the letters it issued to 53 of the UK’s 100 top websites, warning of enforcement action if they failed to allow users to reject all cookies on their cookie banners, with 38 organisations making changes to their cookie banners to make them compliant.

The ICO has advised that next month it will provide clarity on how alternative models (such as subscriptions/contextual advertising) could work.

The ICO has also confirmed it plans to write to the next 200 on its list of top UK websites, using an AI solution to help identify non-compliant cookie banners.
