National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) guidance on pitfalls of performing a basic ‘lift and shift’ cloud migration

The NCSC has expanded its guidance on cloud computing with a section on how to “lift and shift” i.e. “replicating an existing local system, machine-for-machine, but in the cloud.” The guidance is a useful, simple guide on how to approach this kind of migration.

The NCSC cautions that the “lift and shift” technique is only sensible in exceptional cases (which it outlines) and that it may provide only limited benefits in relation to security, scalability and resilience when compared with more sophisticated methods.

The full guidance can be found here.
