The European Health Data Space

In 2022 the European Commission proposed a regulation to “unleash the full potential of health data”. The Council of the EU has now agreed its mandate in relation to the regulation and so can begin negotiations with the European Parliament.

The aim of the European Health Data Space is to allow for easier and faster access to health information both in the individual’s own country and in other member states, as well as giving individuals greater control over how their data is used. A digital health authority will be created in connection with this. The regulation will also include provisions relating to research, allowing for more effective use of health data for research and creating authorities relating to this. Finally, the regulation will require all electronic health record systems to comply with the specifications of the European electronic health record exchange format, ensuring that they are interoperable at EU level.
